Herrin is located in Williamson County, Illinois, approximately 15 miles southwest of Benton and 10 miles northwest of Marion. Incorporated in 1900, Herrin is home to more than 12,000 residents and a thriving economy supported by more than 1,000 businesses based primarily in manufacturing, education, and retail. The city is served by the Herrin Community Unit School District and is located within 25 miles of several excellent colleges and universities, including Rend Lake College, John A. Logan Community College, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Herrin’s moderate seasonal climate affords year-round opportunities for enjoying the fabulous Southern Illinois outdoors. The city is located within twenty minutes of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, a 43,890-acre expanse of lakes, woodlands, and wetlands that abounds with opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, boating, camping, and wildlife viewing. The refuge is home to three recreational lakes, four campgrounds, and restricted zones reserved for deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunting. Crab Orchard Lake is a popular destination for anglers, who travel from miles around to fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, flathead, and black and white crappie.

The Herrin Park District boasts a lovely community park complete with outdoor swimming pool, multi-use recreation facility, baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, a small fishing pond, picnic and playground facilities, and trails for hiking and biking. Local recreation attractions include Pine Lakes Golf Course, an 18-hole regulation course that features three sets of tees for different skill levels, and Herrin Reservoir, a popular fishing spot that features abundant catches of catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, bream, bluegill, and sunfish. Herrin is located just minutes from the Illinois Star Centre Mall, a premier Southern Illinois shopping destination that features more than 60 stores and restaurants anchored by Dillard’s, Sears, and Target.

Downtown Herrin is home to the Herrin Civic Center, a 346-seat multi-use event facility that is home to the Southern Illinois Opry. The civic center hosts numerous events throughout the year, including Herrinfesta Italiana, an annual five-day extravaganza held each May that celebrates the city’s rich Italian heritage with live music, carnival rides, authentic Italian food, arts and crafts, history exhibits, games, activities, and more.
