Carterville is located in Williamson County, Illinois, midway between the cities of Carbondale and Marion. Carterville is situated on the northern edge of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, a 25-mile scenic byway situated along State Route 127 and State Route featuring twelve award-winning family-owned wineries. The city boasts three community parks – Cannon Park, James Street Park, and James Mohan Memorial Park, home of the annual Carterville Labor Day Celebration – and is home to Crab Orchard Golf Course, an 18-hole semi-private golfing facility that offers a fun and enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels.

Nearby outdoor attractions include Murphysboro State Park, Giant City State Park, and Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, home of Crab Orchard Lake and the Blue Heron Marina and Campground. Located just fifty miles to the southeast is Shawnee National Forest, a 280,000-acre expanse of forestland that features picnicking, camping, fishing, boating, hunting, hiking, biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and more.
